NZ vs SA: Māori Milestone & Emerging Stars in T20 Decider

March 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Christchurch, New Zealand – The fifth and deciding T20 International between New Zealand and South Africa is set to take place at Hagley Oval on Wednesday, with the series delicately poised at 2-2 after South Africa secured a 19-run victory in Wellington on Sunday.

The match carries added significance as it potentially marks a historic moment for New Zealand cricket, with Tim Robinson and Katene Clarke having opened the batting together in the fourth T20I. Robinson suggested it may be the first time two Māori players have opened for New Zealand, a claim that is currently being verified by cricket statisticians.

The Māori are the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, representing approximately 14% of the population. Their culture is increasingly visible in New Zealand’s sporting landscape, exemplified by the haka performed by the All Blacks and the inclusion of Māori names in cricket broadcasts. South Africa’s touring squads were also formally welcomed with a Māori ceremony upon their arrival in Mount Maunganui earlier this month.

New Zealand will be without captain Tom Latham for the series decider due to a thumb injury, and Devon Conway is unavailable as he is currently participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). James Neesham will continue to captain the side, with Tom Blundell providing cover.

The series has provided opportunities for emerging players on both sides. For South Africa, wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen impressed with a half-century in Wellington, a performance he credits to a period of reflection during the COVID-19 pandemic, which allowed him to rediscover his passion for the game. The Hermann brothers, Rubin and Jordan, also featured, though Jordan sustained an injury during the fourth match.

Kyle Jamieson, who had limited playing time at the recent T20 World Cup, has been given the opportunity to lead the New Zealand bowling attack in this series. He took 2 for 29 in the fourth T20I, including a wicket maiden. Jamieson acknowledged the series is a chance to assess the team’s composition moving forward. “It’s probably a little bit of learning and exploration around what this team looks like moving forward… but ultimately it’s still trying to win games of cricket,” he said.

South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder is looking to regain form after recording back-to-back ducks. He is known for a remarkable innings in a Test match where he declared on 367 not out, having been encouraged by Brian Lara to pursue a record-breaking score.

Cole McConchie’s availability for the final match is uncertain as he is scheduled to join Rawalpindi Pindiz in the PSL. Should he depart, Jayden Lennox could be included in the New Zealand spin attack.

The probable New Zealand XI is: Tim Robinson, Katene Clark, Dane Cleaver (wk), Nick Kelly, Bevon Jacobs, James Neesham, Cole McConchie/Jayden Lennox, Josh Clarkson, Zak Foukes, Kyle Jamieson, Ben Sears.

South Africa are expected to field the same side that won the fourth T20I: Tony de Zorzi, Wiaan Mulder, Connor Esterhuizen (wk), Rubin Hermann, Dian Forrester, Jason Smith, George Linde, Gerland Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj (capt), Prenelan Subrayen, Ottneil Baartman.

Conditions at Hagley Oval are expected to favour pace and bounce, a prospect that appeals to New Zealand opener Tim Robinson, who is known for his strong back-foot play. A chance of drizzle is forecast for the evening.
