The $9.25 million question on the offensive line

NY Giants post-2026 NFL Draft 53-man roster projection – Big Blue View

May 1, 2026 Chief editor of world-today-news.com Sports
The New York Giants enter 2026 with a roster featuring several new draft picks and a focus on long-term financial management. While additions like Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa provide new foundational pieces, the team must balance veteran salaries against the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the offensive line.

Who survives the final cut when the 53-man roster is locked? For the New York Giants, that question is no longer just about talent, but about the cold mathematics of the salary cap and the specific vision of a coaching staff led by John Harbaugh.

Based on projections from Big Blue View, the Giants are staring down a roster transition where draft-day acquisitions are already squeezing out established veterans. Because the team has not yet held a single practice, these projections remain speculative, but they highlight the precarious positions of several players who once seemed secure.

The $9.25 million question on the offensive line

The most volatile area of the roster is the offensive line, where the arrival of rookie Francis Mauigoa and free agent additions like Daniel Faalele and Lucas Patrick have shifted the internal hierarchy. The tension here is financial as much as it is positional.

There is a distinct possibility that the Giants could cut Jon Runyan to save $9.25 million in cap space. While Big Blue View does not predict this as a certainty, the math suggests it is a viable path if the coaching staff believes a combination of Faalele, Patrick, Aaron Stinnie, Marcus Mbow, Josh Ezeudu, or Evan Neal can fill the void.

The shift in depth is already apparent. Mauigoa and JC Davis are projected to make the roster, which effectively closes the door on potential redemption stories for Evan Neal and Josh Ezeudu. Lucas Patrick is expected to take a roster spot from Stinnie due to his flexibility at center. Meanwhile, General Manager Joe Schoen has emphasized the importance of the rookie’s integration into the system, focusing on how Mauigoa’s size and athleticism can stabilize the front five during the upcoming training camp.

Arvell Reese and the defensive identity shift

The selection of Arvell Reese at No. 5 overall was a move that some analysts found unexpected. This high-draft-capital investment signals a clear intent to prioritize versatility and raw power in the linebacker corps. While many teams viewed the Ohio State product as an outside linebacker, the Giants intend to deploy him primarily at inside linebacker to add “pop” to the middle of the defense.

“He’s a player that fits our structure, our defense very uniquely. Maybe that’s hard for people to see, but you’ll see it soon enough.” John Harbaugh, Head Coach

This move provides defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson with versatile pass-rush packages for third downs. However, Reese’s long-term role may evolve; with Kayvon Thibodeaux’s future in New York appearing uncertain, Reese could eventually transition into a more prominent edge-rushing role. For now, the projection places him at the Will spot to maximize his time on the field.

What to watch: The defensive line remains a point of contention. Projections indicate the absence of D.J. Reader, leaving a unit that includes Darius Alexander and Roy Robertson-Harris, but one that may not yet meet the organization’s ideal standards.

The wide receiver bubble and the Beckham variable

The Giants’ receiving corps is crowded, and the projected 53-man roster reveals a competitive situation for the bottom of the depth chart. Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Darnell Mooney are the established core, supplemented by Calvin Austin, Malachi Fields, and Gunner Olszewski.

The primary uncertainty is whether Odell Beckham Jr. will return to the mix. If he does, it creates a ripple effect: the team might drop Olszewski and move Austin into the primary punt returner role. There is also the possibility that Harbaugh may want to carry seven receivers if Dalen Cambre or Ryan Miller provide enough value on special teams.

One player who appears to be on the outside looking in is Jalin Hyatt. According to the Big Blue View projection, there is no spot for Hyatt if the rest of the receiving group remains healthy.

Quarterback hierarchy and backfield utility

The quarterback room is projected to be a three-man rotation consisting of Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston, and Brandon Allen. The organization is believing they can make a swift turnaround following a challenging 4-13 campaign in 2024, with a significant focus on the development of Jaxson Dart.

In the backfield, the Giants did not add depth via the draft. The room is expected to feature Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy, and Devin Singletary. Notably, the roster projection includes Patrick Ricard as a fullback, a move that complicates the tight end room. Because Ricard provides that specific utility, a fourth tight end—such as Thomas Fidone—is viewed as a luxury the team cannot afford, leaving the group consisting of Isaiah Likely, Theo Johnson, and Chris Manhertz.

The path to a double-digit win season

Joe Schoen has expressed confidence that the roster is now positioned to compete. The Giants have struggled for consistency, failing to achieve a double-digit win season since 2016 and winning six or fewer games in each of the last three years.

Joe Schoen indicated that the team is now in a position to compete, acknowledging that the previous season’s four-win total was insufficient. He noted that the team had held leads in the fourth quarter during five different games, including some by double digits, which they were unable to close out.

The team is focusing on building chemistry between the veteran core and the new arrivals as they head into camp. With the rookies arriving, the focus shifts from theoretical projections to on-field execution, as the organization looks to integrate the foundational pieces mentioned by Schoen into a cohesive unit.
