NXT Heatwave: Tony D’Angelo to Defend Title in Fatal 4-Way Match

August 19, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Heading into the late-August stretch of the 2026 sports calendar, WWE NXT general manager Robert Stone has officially restructured the NXT Championship match for the upcoming Heatwave premium live event. Tony D’Angelo will now defend his title in a four-way bout against Cruz Montana, Grayson Waller, and newcomer Zilla Fatu at the Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg, Texas on August 30, according to coverage from Wrestling Attitude and Wrestling Inc.

Roster Dynamics and the Path to Heatwave

The championship picture shifted dramatically during the August 18 episode of NXT at the Performance Center in Orlando, as reported by Wrestling Noticias. The original booking slated D’Angelo to defend his belt against the winner of a number one contender’s match between Waller and Montana. That qualifying bout ended in a chaotic no-contest when Zilla Fatu interfered and attacked both competitors.

Rather than running back a singles match, Stone stepped in during Tuesday’s broadcast to address the interference. After Montana confronted Waller during a promo segment and demanded a shot at the champion, Stone intervened. He acknowledged that both Waller and Montana had been compromised by Fatu’s interference, prompting the general manager to insert both men into the title picture alongside D’Angelo.

The Arrival of Zilla Fatu

Fatu’s integration into the championship match came at the close of the broadcast. According to Wrestling Inc, Stone announced that Fatu’s debut match under his official WWE contract would immediately be a championship opportunity. Stone handed Fatu his paperwork at the end of the show, sealing a four-way collision that concluded the broadcast with a physical brawl between all four contenders and the champion.

D’Angelo originally captured the title on April 4 at Stand & Deliver by overcoming Joe Hendry, Ethan Page, and Ricky Saints in a Fatal 4-Way Match, according to Wrestling Noticias.
