NVIDIA DLSS 5: Addressing Criticism & What We Know So Far

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has defended his company’s new DLSS 5 technology against criticism, even as statements from NVIDIA engineers suggest the technology’s capabilities may not align with his initial claims. Huang asserted that DLSS 5 utilizes “neural rendering” techniques and “generative control at the geometry level,” but internal documentation and comments from staff indicate the technology operates similarly to previous DLSS iterations.

The controversy surfaced following Huang’s dismissal of concerns regarding DLSS 5’s performance. According to reports, NVIDIA’s own slides reveal that DLSS 5 functions using the same data inputs as earlier versions of the technology. This contradicts Huang’s description of a more fundamental shift in rendering processes. Jacob Freeman, a member of the NVIDIA team, further clarified the technology’s functionality in a discussion with YouTuber Daniel Owen, confirming that DLSS 5 takes a 2D frame plus motion vectors as input and relies on screen space lighting and reflection calculations.

Freeman also addressed concerns about unintended alterations to character appearances, such as the addition of facial features resembling makeup, stating, “The underlying geometry is unchanged.” He characterized these instances as artifacts of an early preview of the technology and emphasized that developers will have extensive control over the enhancements, including intensity, color grading, and the ability to mask specific objects from being affected. “We continue to talk to developers to understand all the ways they would like to control the technology,” Freeman said. “we see DLSS 5 as a tool for them to achieve their artistic vision, rather than be limited by the capabilities of traditional real-time rendering.”

Despite the widespread criticism, several game development studios are currently evaluating DLSS 5. Some industry observers suggest the technology could prove beneficial for visually enhancing games that lack advanced rendering techniques, citing titles like Starfield as potential candidates. Gamers retain the option to disable DLSS 5 within games, allowing them to avoid any unwanted visual changes.

The success of DLSS 5 will likely depend on developers’ ability to refine the technology and mitigate unintended alterations to game artwork. NVIDIA anticipates a full launch later this year, giving studios time to integrate the technology and ensure it aligns with their creative goals.
