Novaspace: LMT and Novaspace Partner to Develop 5G/6G Satcom Hub in Latvia
Latvian Mobile Telephone and Novaspace Forge Pact
Latvian Mobile Telephone and space consultancy Novaspace signed a cooperation agreement to build a telecommunications innovation platform linking Latvia’s connectivity sector with the international satellite industry, Novaspace announced in a press release.
The agreement establishes a framework to design a Latvian 5G and 6G terrestrial and non-terrestrial network hub. The initiative follows the European Space Agency 5G and 6G Non-Terrestrial Network Hub model, exploring Latvia’s potential role within that broader network, according to Novaspace.
Establishing a Space Innovation Ecosystem
The signed cooperation agreement marks a step toward building an internationally competitive telecommunications sector in Latvia. The initiative brings Latvian Mobile Telephone into the space industry while fostering a wider space innovation ecosystem focused on next-generation satellite technologies, commercial applications, resilient critical infrastructure, security, digitalization, and the green transition, according to the Novaspace release.
Space infrastructure gradually enhances terrestrial networks, and the upcoming 6G era will link terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks to maintain resilient connectivity during severe weather, power outages, or physical infrastructure disruptions.

LMT Integrates Satellite Communications for 6G Era
The newly planned hub builds on Latvian Mobile Telephone’s existing connectivity work. The company is already collaborating with the European Space Agency and satellite operator Sateliot to pioneer energy-efficient dual-mode satellite Internet of Things connectivity, enabled by Latvia’s associate membership in the space agency.
Ingmārs Pūķis, vice president and member of the management board at Latvian Mobile Telephone, stated that integrating satellite communications into the infrastructure is essential as the industry prepares for the 6G era.
EU Programme Funds Network Hub Development
The agreement was signed under the European Union-funded FIERCE Ecosystem Building Programme. Through this initiative, Novaspace will work directly with Latvian Mobile Telephone to define and validate the concept, guiding the company toward establishing the terrestrial and non-terrestrial network hub.
Gabrielle Brophy, senior manager at Novaspace, stated that Europe’s space sector relies on active participation across all member states.
The planned hub will be developed alongside regional research and industry partners to retain and grow specialized engineering and scientific competencies in the Baltic region. Representatives from the European Space Agency, Novaspace, and the Latvian embassy in the Netherlands attended the signing ceremony in Noordwijk.
