Novak Djokovic Misses Out on Turin Qualification After Paris Defeat

Novak Djokovic Misses Out on Turin Qualification After Paris Defeat

November 6, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Novak Djokovic will miss the ATP Finals after failing to qualify.

The Defeat That Closed the Turin Door

Qualifying for the season-ending championships in Turin would have given Djokovic a chance to secure a record-extending eighth title at the event. Instead, his failure to reach the quarterfinals in any of this year’s Masters 1000 events caught up with him. Despite reaching the final of the Australian Open and the semi-finals of Wimbledon, Djokovic has not reached the quarter-final in any of this year’s Masters 1000 events. He had not failed to qualify for the tournament when fit since 2017. He won the last of his 24 Grand Slam titles at the US Open in 2023.

Only Americans Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul remain in contention to take the final two qualification places currently held by Frances Tiafoe and Rafael Jodar. Tiafoe saw his own chances slip away earlier on Wednesday when he fell to a 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (11-9) defeat against Frenchman Quentin Halys. Australian Alex de Minaur then failed to capitalize on the changing conditions, losing 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 to Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry when a strong run in Paris could have secured his spot.

Contrasting Fortunes for Top Seeds in Paris

Other top-ranked players experienced similar struggles on the courts. World number one Alexander Zverev and fourth seed Daniil Medvedev, both of whom already secured their places in Turin, suffered early exits. Zverev expressed frustration after a straight-sets loss to Lorenzo Musetti, stating he was “annoyed” by the public response to him becoming world number one. Meanwhile, Medvedev fell 6-4, 6-4 to Peruvian world number 33 Ignacio Buse.

Taylor Fritz skirted close to elimination before battling through a tense third-set tie-break to defeat 78th-ranked Alex Molcan of Slovakia 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Earlier in the schedule, Tommy Paul swept Spain’s Daniel Merida 6-1, 6-1. Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz advanced as the highest remaining seed in the tournament by overcoming American Alex Michelsen 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
