Nottingham Forest has dismissed head coach Nuno Espírito Santo following a fractured relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis. The decision comes despite Nuno guiding Forest to Europa League qualification last season - their first European campaign since 1995 – and being recently awarded a new contract in June.
The breakdown stemmed from nuno’s public criticism of the club’s summer transfer business, reportedly totaling nearly £100 million on players including James McAtee, Omari hutchinson, arnaud Kalimuendo and Douglas Luiz, and subsequent doubts about his future. Last month, responding to speculation about his position, Nuno stated, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” acknowledging issues with Marinakis. He added, “We certainly know each other very well…I’m the first one to be worried. I’m the first one to be concerned.”
Nuno also admitted the relationship with the owner had deteriorated, saying, “Last season was very, very, very close. This season, not so well.” Tensions were previously visible after a 2-2 draw against Leicester at the end of last season, where Marinakis was seen in a heated discussion with Nuno, initially attributed to a concern over Taiwo Awoniyi‘s injury.
A club statement acknowledged Nuno’s contribution, especially in the “very prosperous” 2024/25 season, stating he “will always hold a special place in our journey.” forest officials reportedly were surprised by Nuno’s public disclosure of the strained relationship.
Nuno departs with Forest currently 10th in the Premier League, marking the club’s highest standing under a manager since Frank Clark.
