Nottingham Forest Lose to Brighton: Pereira Points to Fatigue | Premier League Update 2026

Brighton & Hove Albion defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, leaving Forest precariously positioned two points above the Premier League relegation zone with ten games remaining. The defeat marks the second consecutive league loss for Forest under modern manager Vítor Pereira, and comes just days after a Europa League play-off match against Fenerbahçe.

Diego Gómez opened the scoring for Brighton, but Morgan Gibbs-White quickly equalized for the visitors. However, Danny Welbeck restored Brighton’s lead just two minutes later, a goal that ultimately proved decisive. Welbeck’s strike was his tenth of the season, matching a career best.

Pereira attributed his team’s sluggish first-half performance to fatigue and tactical errors. “To press in the way we want to, we need energy,” he said after the match. “In the first half, we tried to press as if we had a full tank of energy.” He added that the team struggled with the “trigger to press together,” instead initiating pressure individually and conceding space that Brighton exploited.

The scheduling demands of balancing Premier League survival with a Europa League campaign are proving challenging for Forest. Pereira noted that Brighton had a full week to prepare for the match, while Forest were playing their third game in as many days. “They prepared in seven days, not in three days as we did,” he stated. “They tried to press us and we didn’t uncover the proper spaces to proceed.”

Pereira made adjustments to the system during the second half, aiming to better control space and limit Brighton’s opportunities. While he felt the team improved after the break, he acknowledged they failed to capitalize on chances to secure a point. “We lost an opportunity to get points,” he said. “We should put our focus on this game because the next game is (Manchester) City.”

The manager likewise defended his decision to rest Gibbs-White in the midweek Europa League match, stating it was a necessary measure to ensure he had energy for the Brighton fixture. “We rested Morgan for the last game. It makes a big difference,” Pereira explained. “If I didn’t change for the last game, imagine today. Competing in the Europa League and competing again after three days, we needed to understand the proper times to press and the proper times to wait.”

Nottingham Forest’s next fixture is a difficult away match against Manchester City. The club is now facing increased pressure as they attempt to navigate a challenging run-in to avoid relegation, having already changed managers four times this season.
