Northwest Indiana Power Outages Visible From Space After Historic Storms

August 16, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Severe storms and tornadoes have left nearly 175,000 homes and businesses in Northwest Indiana without power as of Friday, August 15, 2026. NIPSCO, the regional utility provider, is managing what it describes as the largest outage in the company’s history following wind gusts of 99 mph and multiple tornado touchdowns.

While NIPSCO expects 90% of customers to have power by Tuesday, August 19, and full restoration by Friday, August 21, the delay has triggered a humanitarian and legal crisis in cities like Gary and East Chicago.

Tornado Outbreak and Infrastructure Collapse

The National Weather Service confirmed that at least six tornadoes struck the Chicago and Northwest Indiana region during the Tuesday outbreak. This included an EF2 tornado traveling from Monee to Crete and an EF1 tornado moving from Orland Park toward Flossmoor. Two of these tornadoes crossed directly into Indiana, causing damage to power lines and poles.

Resident Angelo Comer described the storm as “23 minutes of hell,” noting that sirens wailed as debris hit houses. The result was a blackout for more than 34,000 NIPSCO customers in Gary alone. Across the broader region, the outage peaked at over 301,000 customers, according to yournews.com.

The recovery effort has been hampered by subsequent storms on Wednesday and Thursday, which NIPSCO says created new outages and slowed existing restoration work.

Human Cost and Public Health Risks

The prolonged loss of electricity has resulted in two confirmed fatalities: 58-year-old Paula Plebanski in Gary, who was struck by roofing material, and 86-year-old Leona Rice in Portage, who died following a house explosion during the storm’s aftermath.

In East Chicago, resident Jennifer Fodor reported the struggle of managing her daughter’s seizure disorder without reliable power. The lack of refrigeration has also forced families to discard massive amounts of food; Comer reported filling two garbage bags with spoiled freezer contents.

Pastor Manuel Corazzari of the East Chicago Church, which has become a community hub providing food and shelter, said that people had expressed feelings of discouragement, to the point of considering ending their lives. He emphasized the importance of taking action during such a crisis, stating, “The worst thing you can do when something is happening like this is do nothing.”

Attorneys for a 77-year-old Porter County woman have filed a lawsuit against NIPSCO, alleging that the utility’s failure to maintain power caused a delay in her emergency hip surgery.

Political Backlash and Rate Disputes

Gary City Councilman At-Large Darren Washington stated that the Gary Common Council unanimously passed a resolution putting NIPSCO on notice regarding “excessive rates.”

Angelo Comer reported a February bill of $785.00, which covers both gas and electricity.

State Mobilization and Recovery Timeline

Governor Mike Braun has declared a statewide disaster emergency and authorized the Indiana National Guard to assist in Lake County. The Guard’s mission includes clearing debris and coordinating food distribution for displaced families.

Milestone Expected Date Target Recovery
Partial Restoration Tuesday, Aug 19 90% of affected customers
Full Restoration Friday, Aug 21 100% of affected customers
