Cedar Rapids’ Historic Northtowne Cycling + Fitness Enters New Ownership After 100 Years
Cedar Rapids, IA – Northtowne Cycling + Fitness, a Cedar Rapids institution celebrating it’s centennial year, has been acquired by Derek Meier of Cedar Rapids, effective October 1st. The sale marks the end of the Stepanek family’s decades-long stewardship of the business, initiated by Derek and Jodi Stepanek’s search for a buyer earlier this year.
The shop’s roots stretch back to 1925, when Willard morgan founded Morgan Brothers Bicycles and Motorcycles in downtown Cedar Rapids, initially selling both bicycles and motorcycles from Harley-Davidson and Indian. The business remained family-run, passing from Willard to his son, Don morgan, and then to Bill Stepanek in the late 1960s. Don Stepanek, Bill’s brother, later joined the company.
A pivotal shift occurred in the 1970s with a move to Cedar Rapids’ northeast side and a rebranding as Northtowne Schwinn Cyclery,a dedicated Schwinn concept store. The Stepaneks further diversified, adding fitness equipment through a partnership with Global Gym Equipment.
In 1980, the business relocated to its current location at 1150 Blairs ferry Road NE, undergoing a important remodel in 2000. Derek Stepanek assumed leadership in 2010.
“This decision was about more than acquiring a strong business; Northtowne’s reputation, loyal customer base, and operational excellence speak for themselves,” said Meier in a released statement. “What truly inspired me was the mission: helping people live happier and healthier lives through cycling and fitness.”
northtowne has established itself as a leader in Iowa’s rapidly growing e-bike market, a sector projected for continued double-digit growth over the next six years.
Meier acknowledged the legacy of the Stepanek family, stating, “Derek, Jodi, and the entire Stepanek family’s leadership, vision, and integrity have shaped Northtowne into a trusted and welcoming space for riders of all kinds.”
Derek Stepanek echoed this sentiment, expressing his desire for a seamless transition. “I’m so proud of what our family has built, and I love this community and the relationships we’ve formed,” he said. “As we look toward the future, we want to ensure that Northtowne continues to thrive.”
Meier intends to build upon this foundation, stating, ”Cedar Rapids has always embraced cycling, not just as a sport, but as a way of life. My goal is to preserve everything that makes Northtowne special while continuing to evolve with the needs of our community.”
Northtowne Cycling + Fitness will host a community open house in early November to introduce Meier and celebrate the next chapter of this historic Cedar Rapids business. More details can be found at https://www.northtownebikes.com/.
