Northern Lights Dazzle Skies Across UK and ireland, potential for Further Displays Tonight
Spectacular displays of the Northern Lights were visible across parts of the UK and Ireland overnight, captivating observers with vibrant colors. Following a powerful solar storm, conditions remain favorable for further aurora sightings on Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
The phenomenon, triggered by a coronal mass ejection – a release of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun – is a result of the interaction between charged particles and Earth’s magnetic field. While the aurora was widely seen in northern regions, visibility further south and in urban areas was impacted by light pollution. A waxing gibbous moon, between a half and full moon, also presented a challenge to clear viewing.
Rain is expected to track northwards this evening in Ireland, becoming heavy over Munster and south Leinster, with maximum temperatures reaching 13C.
Krista Hammond, Met Office space weather manager, emphasized the dynamic nature of forecasts. “Forecasts can change rapidly, so we encourage the public to stay updated with the latest data.”
Coronal mass ejections can travel at speeds of up to several million kilometers per hour. When directed towards Earth, they trigger geomagnetic storms, which in turn produce the aurora displays. The strength of these displays depends on the intensity of the storm and local conditions.
