County Durham Playwright Sarah Bond Nominated for Prestigious Stage Debut Award

DURHAM, UK – County Durham playwright Sarah Bond has been nominated for a Stage Debut Award, recognizing her work on the critically acclaimed play Seagulls, and Sad, Sad Stories. The proclamation marks a significant achievement for the emerging writer and highlights the growing strength of regional theater in the United Kingdom.

Bond’s play, which premiered at The Laurels Theatre in Whitley Bay in December, resonated with audiences for its authentic portrayal of life in the North East of England. The nomination places her among a select group of debut playwrights vying for the coveted award, presented September 28th. A win would not only honor Bond’s talent but also spotlight the region’s vibrant theatrical community and its capacity to produce compelling, nationally-recognized work.

Seagulls, and Sad, Sad Stories featured a cast entirely comprised of actors from the North East, including Jake Jarratt, who landed his first acting role in the production as Jordan. “It’s great for the region, we’re going up against the big boys. It just shows we can do theatre up here, it’s not all about football and being daft,” Jarratt said.

The play’s success extends beyond the stage; Bloomsbury published the manuscript as a book earlier this year, further expanding its reach and impact. Bond expressed her excitement, stating,”Out of 200 plays we got the nod,and it would be a real honour to win,as this play really is written for the North East and about the North East.”

The Stage Debut Awards celebrate breakthrough talent in British theatre. Bond’s nomination underscores the increasing recognition of regional voices and the power of storytelling rooted in specific communities.
