Poetry Raises Funds for North England’s Homeless

Anthology inspired by Live Aid features 100 regional poets

An anthology featuring 100 poets from the north-east of England seeks to generate money and raise awareness for the region’s homeless population. Profits from “Words on a NE Street” will go to local charities.

Inspired to Help

Writer Andrew Mears, who lives in Newcastle, spearheaded the project, explaining that the 40th anniversary of Live Aid motivated him. He was “really honoured” so many wanted to be involved after he put out a call for submissions in February.

According to government data, as of December 2024, there were 79,840 homeless households in England, up 6.3% from the previous year, highlighting the critical need for support (Gov.uk).

Poignant Voices

**Mr. Mears** noted that some of the most impactful poems came from those who had experienced homelessness firsthand. He hopes the book will encourage greater empathy and reflection on the issue.

“The book in itself isn’t going to stop homelessness, but I hope it’s going to help people think about it more,” **Mears** said.

Dedicated to the Cause

**Mears** expressed gratitude to friends who assisted with formatting, editing, and spell-checking the anthology. He remarked on the unexpected workload involved in managing contributions from so many writers.
