Noroviruses Suspected in Jeseník Spa Outbreak Affecting Over 100 Guests

August 18, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Norovirus Outbreak Strikes Jeseník Spa

Between August 7 and the second half of last week, a mass outbreak of acute gastroenteritis caused by noroviruses struck 111 clients and visitors at the Priessnitz Medical Spa in Jeseník, Czechia. According to the Olomouc Regional Public Health Station, the highly contagious intestinal infection triggered cramps, watery diarrhea, and vomiting across an extraordinary number of patients, which the station’s spokesperson Markéta Koutná noted as something they had not dealt with in the Olomouc region since COVID.

Urgent Investigation Into Contamination Vector

The sudden wave of illnesses prompted immediate intervention from regional health authorities and spa management. While initial clinical screening of one patient sample confirmed the presence of noroviruses, public health inspectors continue to test additional laboratory samples to pinpoint the exact vector of the outbreak. Investigators are examining whether the virus originated from an infected staff member or contaminated food supplies consumed on site, according to statements made by regional health officials.

Swift Containment Halts New Infections

The implementation of protiepidemická opatření successfully halted the spread of new infections. Spa director Roman Provazník confirmed that administration rolled out surface and hand sanitization protocols, informed guests, and monitored employee health and internal catering operations alongside food sampling. These containment steps stabilized the situation, leaving no new cases reported.

Clinical Impact and Operational Support

For most affected individuals, the clinical course of norovirus was mild. According to the Olomouc Regional Public Health Station, people without compromised immunity typically overcome the pathogen within one to three days.

Pending Lab Results Awaited to Close Inquiry

Investigators await final laboratory results from pending biological and food samples to officially close the inquiry into the source of contamination.
