March 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team suffered a 21-7 defeat to No. 2 Richmond on Saturday at Garber Field, dropping their record to 7-3 for the season while the Spiders remain undefeated at 8-0.

Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johnson set UMass on the board first, scoring at the 13:22 mark of the opening quarter. However, Richmond responded with two quick goals, taking a lead they would not relinquish. Aidan O’Neil and Joe Sheridan scored for Richmond within a 42-second span to shift momentum.

Sophomore Robbie Granara led the UMass offense with four goals and an assist, totaling five points. Junior Matthew Cargiulo and freshman Thomas Bagnall each contributed two assists. Sophomore Jack Turowsky extended his goal-scoring streak to 10 consecutive games to start the season, adding another goal to his tally. Senior Zach Auble anchored the defensive effort with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Richmond’s offense proved dominant, led by Aidan O’Neil’s seven points from three goals and four assists. Lucas Littlejohn added four goals and an assist, while Daniel Picart registered a hat trick with an assist. Joe Sheridan, Jack Ricciardi, and Leo Caine each tallied three points for the Spiders.

Despite two man-up goals – scored by Adian Drunsic and Robbie Granara – before halftime, UMass struggled to contain Richmond’s offensive pressure. The Spiders opened the third quarter with a 4-0 run, further extending their advantage. Richmond’s Sheridan scored the first goal of the third quarter.

Richmond controlled possession throughout the game, out-shooting UMass 45-22 and winning the ground ball battle 46-23. UMass capitalized on man-up opportunities, converting 2 of 3, while Richmond went 1-for-4.

UMass will return to action next Saturday, March 28, traveling to St. Bonaventure for an Atlantic 10 matchup scheduled for 12 p.m.
