Nintendo Patents Hint at New Xenoblade Chronicles & Joy-Con 2 Features

March 31, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Nintendo has filed new patents in the United States related to potential accessories for the forthcoming Switch 2 console, sparking speculation about upcoming features and a possible new installment in the Xenoblade Chronicles series. The filings, first reported by NintendoSoup, detail both Joy-Con 2 adaptors and what appears to be a new combat system interface.

One patent describes adaptors designed to magnetically attach to the Joy-Con 2 controllers, aiming to improve accessibility of the upper buttons with a single hand. These adaptors echo existing accessories for the original Switch, suggesting Nintendo is continuing to refine the controller experience.

More significantly, a second patent has drawn attention due to its resemblance to the battle interface found in previous Xenoblade Chronicles titles. Images associated with the patent depict a user interface with elements similar to those used in the combat systems of the Xenoblade franchise, fueling rumors of a new game in the series.

Monolith Soft, the developer behind the Xenoblade Chronicles series, recently released Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on February 19th in both Europe and North America, according to Nintendo Life. The release followed the surprise launch of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition in March 2025, with the developer aiming to replicate that success on the new hardware. TechRadar’s review of the Switch 2 upgrade noted the game achieves a 4K resolution at up to 60fps, though the image quality isn’t as crisp as other titles on the platform.

Monolith Soft has a history of ambitious RPG development, distinguishing itself within Nintendo’s portfolio, as noted by NoobFeed. The studio’s co-founder, Hirohide Sugiura, has emphasized a commitment to continuous improvement, stating they “will always wish to set sights loftier.”

Nintendo has not commented on the patents or any potential new Xenoblade Chronicles projects. The company has yet to announce any further releases beyond those already scheduled.
