Nick Dragotta’s artwork is redefining Batman’s visual identity with the launch of Absolute Batman, the first title in DC Comics’ new Absolute Universe imprint. The series, which began publication on October 9, 2024, presents a reimagining of the iconic character, illustrated by Dragotta and written by Scott Snyder.
The project originated with a direct approach from Snyder to Dragotta approximately a year prior to the comic’s release, seeking an artist to “take a stab at Batman if his origin was to happen today.” Dragotta’s design departs from traditional depictions of the character, portraying a 24-year-old Bruce Wayne as a blue-collar civil engineer who operates as Batman at night, utilizing self-designed equipment, and armor.
Absolute Batman distinguishes itself through its narrative focus and artistic style. The series introduces Alfred Pennyworth as an MI6 agent investigating a terrorist organization known as the Party Animals, led by Roman Sionis, while simultaneously attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter and track the elusive Joker. The comic’s premise as well features a young Bruce Wayne witnessing his father’s murder during a mass shooting.
The creation of Absolute Batman is linked to DC’s broader “All In” initiative and the establishment of the Absolute Universe. Snyder reportedly shared the “flavor” of these initiatives with Dragotta during their initial discussions, outlining how the new Batman title would fit within the larger publishing strategy. The Absolute Universe aims to present fresh interpretations of core DC characters, with Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman following Absolute Batman as launch titles.
The series is currently ongoing, with seventeen issues published as of February 21, 2026. Various artists have contributed to the series beyond Dragotta, including Gabriel Hernández, Walta, Marcos Martín, and Clay Mann. The comic is available in both print and digital formats, including an eBook edition.
