Nicholas Brendon, Xander Harris on ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ Dies at 54
Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 54, his family announced Friday night. Brendon died in his sleep of natural causes, according to a statement posted on his X account.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the family wrote. “Most people know Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting, and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
Born Nicholas Brendon Schultz on April 12, 1971, in Los Angeles, California, Brendon rose to prominence playing the witty and often hapless Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, appearing in all but one of the show’s 144 episodes over its seven-season run. The role established him as a fan favorite within the series’ devoted following.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred as Buffy Summers, remembered Brendon on social media Saturday, quoting a line from a poem and writing, “I saw you Nicky. I know you are at peace, in that big rocking chair in the sky.” Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg on the show, also paid tribute, writing, “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I will think of you every time I see a rocking chair. I love you. RIP.”
Following Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Brendon continued to work in television and film, with roles on shows such as Kitchen Confidential, Criminal Minds, and Private Practice. He also appeared in independent films including Coherence (2013) and Psycho Beach Party (2000). According to a biography on his website, Brendon remained active within the Buffy fan community, regularly attending conventions and contributing to the franchise’s comic book continuation, receiving writing credits on several issues.
In recent years, Brendon faced a number of health challenges, including spinal surgeries in 2021 and a heart attack in 2022, which was attributed to a congenital heart defect. He had also publicly discussed his struggles with depression and alcoholism, which led to several legal issues over the past 15 years, including arrests for felony domestic violence, robbery, vandalism, and resisting arrest.
“Although it’s no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis and he was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing,” his family stated. “Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart. Thank you to everyone who has shown love and support.”
Brendon’s death occurred less than a week after news emerged of the cancellation of a planned Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival, a project in which he was not involved.
