Nicholas Brendon Dies: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Star Passes Away at 54

Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for his role as Xander Harris in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died, his family announced Friday. He was 54 years aged.

Brendon died in his sleep of natural causes, according to a statement posted on his official Facebook page. The family requested privacy as they grieve.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed in his sleep of natural causes,” the statement read. “Most people realize Nicky for his work as an actor and for the characters he brought to life over the years. In recent years Nicky has found his passion in painting, and art. Nicky loved to share his enthusiastic talent with his family, friends and fans. He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was.”

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which aired from 1997 to 2003, centered on a teenage girl tasked with battling vampires and other supernatural forces. Brendon’s character, Xander Harris, served as a close friend and comedic foil to the titular Buffy, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Born in Los Angeles, Brendon appeared in multiple television shows and films throughout his career. He was nominated for a Saturn Award in 1998 and 1999 for best genre TV actor, and again in 2000 for best supporting actor for his work on Buffy. He also had a recurring role on the CBS crime drama Criminal Minds, portraying Kevin Lynch, an FBI technical analyst.

In recent years, Brendon had been open about his struggles with health issues. He revealed in 2023 that he had suffered a heart attack and been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect, as well as cauda equina syndrome, which required multiple spinal surgeries, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor’s life was also marked by public struggles with substance abuse and legal issues. He was arrested in Boise, Idaho, in October 2014, and again in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in February 2015, for incidents involving disturbances and property damage. He was scheduled to appear on The Dr. Phil Show in August 2015 to discuss these issues, but reportedly left the interview before it concluded.

Allyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, posted a tribute to Brendon on Instagram, writing, “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I love you. RIP.”
