Nicholas Brendon, ‘Buffy’ Star, Dies at 54 of Natural Causes
Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died, his family announced. He was 54 years ancient.
The actor passed away in his sleep on March 20, 2026, of natural causes, according to a statement released on Brendon’s social media accounts and confirmed to TODAY. “We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the statement read. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes.”
Brendon rose to prominence portraying Xander Harris, a central character in all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which aired from 1997 to 2003. The series, created by Joss Whedon, became a cultural phenomenon, and Brendon’s portrayal of the often-comedic, yet deeply loyal friend to Buffy Summers, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, resonated with audiences.
In recent years, Brendon had rediscovered a passion for painting and art, sharing his work with family, friends, and fans, his family stated. “He was passionate, sensitive, and endlessly driven to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he was,” the statement continued.
Brendon had faced health challenges in recent years. According to reports from Germany’s Deutschlandfunk, he suffered a heart attack in 2023, which led to the discovery of a congenital heart defect. The actor also had a history of legal issues, with multiple arrests throughout his career.
Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow Rosenberg on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” posted a tribute to Brendon, calling him “sweet Nicky” and thanking him for “years of laughter, love and Dodgers.”
The family has requested privacy as they grieve his loss and celebrate his life, describing him as a man who lived “with intensity, imagination, and heart.”
