Nicholas Brendon: Buffy Star Dies Aged 54
Nicholas Brendon, the actor best known for his role as Xander Harris in the television series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” died Friday, March 20, at the age of 54, his family announced. Brendon passed in his sleep of natural causes, according to a statement posted on his official Facebook page.
Brendon played Xander Harris, a founding member of the Scooby Gang and the character providing much of the show’s comedic relief, throughout all seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” which originally aired on The WB from 1997 to 2003. He was nominated for a Saturn Award for best genre TV actor in 1998 and 1999, and for best supporting actor in 2000 for his work on the series.
“We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon,” the family statement read. “He passed in his sleep of natural causes. Our family asks for privacy during this time as we grieve his loss and celebrate the life of a man who lived with intensity, imagination, and heart.”
Allyson Hannigan, who co-starred as Willow Rosenberg on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” paid tribute to Brendon on Instagram, writing, “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers. I love you. RIP.”
Beyond “Buffy,” Brendon appeared in multiple episodes of the CBS crime drama “Criminal Minds” as Kevin Lynch, an FBI technical analyst and a love interest for Penelope Garcia, played by Kirsten Vangsness. He also had a role in the short-lived Fox series “Kitchen Confidential.”
In recent years, Brendon had been open about his struggles with health issues, substance abuse, and mental health. He faced several arrests in the mid-2010s, including incidents in Boise, Idaho, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, involving disturbances and property damage. He was scheduled to appear on “The Dr. Phil Show” in 2015 to discuss these issues but reportedly left the interview before it concluded.
The actor had also recently rediscovered a passion for painting and art, sharing his work with family, friends, and fans, according to his family’s statement. His family noted that his art was “one of the purest reflections of who he was.”
According to a statement released by his family, Brendon had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and was on medication to manage the condition. He was described as optimistic about the future at the time of his death.
