Niall Horan on Liam Payne’s Death, Grief & New Album ‘Dinner Party’
Niall Horan’s upcoming album, Dinner Party, includes a deeply personal tribute to his late One Direction bandmate, Liam Payne, who died in October 2024 at the age of 31 after a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Horan revealed in a fresh interview that the song, titled “End of an Era,” emerged from a period of grief and withdrawal following Payne’s death.
Speaking with GQ Hype, Horan described his initial reaction to the news as disbelief. “I just remember getting a message, and I was just like, ‘What?’” he recalled. “I just didn’t think it was real.” He added, “Someone so young, you’re not expecting to hear that they’ve passed, especially someone that you’ve just seen. I just went back from shock to sadness to anger.”
The two musicians had recently reunited in South America, just weeks before Payne’s death. Horan, who was on tour at the time, described the meeting as positive. “It was great,” he said. “Seemed in good form, and we had a good laugh, good reminisce.” He noted the unique bond they shared, recalling a sentiment echoed by Louis Tomlinson: “It’s like you haven’t seen each other in ages and then you just fall back in like it was 10 years ago.”
Following Payne’s funeral, Horan retreated from public life, a period he described as “going into hiding a little bit” to process his grief. It was during this time that he began writing “End of an Era,” a song that reflects on their shared history and the sudden loss. Lyrics from the song, shared in the GQ Hype profile, include the lines: “We had it / Pure magic / Remember what it was like / Time passes / So fast and / I couldn’t tell you goodbye.”
The song is the final track on Dinner Party, set for release on June 5th. Even as “End of an Era” is a poignant tribute to Payne, the album largely focuses on Horan’s relationship with his girlfriend, Amelia Woolley. The album title itself, and its lead single, are inspired by the dinner parties where Horan and Woolley first met.
Horan discussed Woolley’s reaction to being the muse for his music in a recent interview on Heart Breakfast. He revealed that she is “dumbfounded” by the experience, adding, “She’s obviously never had a song written about her before. And then I’ve written basically two albums about her and she’s like, ‘Ehh?’”
