Niagara Falls Mayor urges Swift Action as Marineland Belugas face Food Supply Concerns
NIAGARA FALLS, ON - Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati is emphasizing the urgent need to find new homes for the approximately 30 beluga whales at the former Marineland theme park, citing dwindling food supplies. The park, which closed to the public in 2023, is facing challenges in maintaining adequate provisions for the animals as it transitions ownership.
Diodati stated that a collaborative effort between Marineland, the provincial government, and the federal government is crucial to finding a solution. “Here, peopel are anxious for thes beautiful and majestic animals to hopefully have a soft landing somewhere, hopefully in Canada,” he said.
The situation comes as Marineland’s future remains uncertain. The 323-hectare property is currently managed by a trust following the deaths of its original owners, with no family members involved in its operation. Diodati expressed hope that the land will eventually be redeveloped into a “world-class attraction” without animals.
While potential relocation options, including other facilities, have been explored, Diodati stressed the limited timeframe for securing a suitable surroundings for the belugas. He called on the federal government to prioritize the animals’ well-being and work with provincial and local authorities to ensure a smooth transition.
Animal welfare advocates have suggested a whale sanctuary in Nova Scotia as a possible relocation site.Though, researchers caution that moving the belugas from captivity could introduce new challenges.
