NHS Doctor Suspended Pending Inquiry into Alleged Antisemitic Posts
A doctor with the National Health Service (NHS) has been suspended from practice pending a fitness-to-practise investigation by the General Medical Council (GMC).The GMC,the autonomous regulator of doctors, physician associates and anaesthesia associates in the UK,launched the investigation following complaints regarding alleged antisemitic and perhaps terrorism-supporting comments made by Dr. aladwan on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
an interim orders tribunal (IOT) in Manchester determined to suspend Dr. aladwan’s practice while the GMC conducts a full investigation. The tribunal heard evidence that the alleged posts included antisemitic conspiracy theories and content described as “demonis[ing], or express[ing] and encourag[ing] hatred towards Jews in general, their history and their way of life.”
While the IOT acknowledged “no information to suggest that any patient complaints have been raised or that any patients have come to harm,” it decided to impose the suspension as a precautionary measure.
Dr. Aladwan’s legal counsel argued to the tribunal that there was “no evidence” her online activity had impacted patient safety or her professional duties.
The suspension is effective promptly and will be reviewed within six months. The IOT hearing does not rule on the truth of the allegations, but rather determines appropriate restrictions during the investigative process. The GMC’s fitness-to-practise investigations are conducted to protect patient safety.
