NHL Prospect Pool Rankings 2026: Blue Jackets’ Farm System Breakdown | The Athletic
Columbus Blue Jackets fans have reason for cautious optimism as the team’s prospect pool, although diminished from its previous ranking, still holds significant potential, according to a comprehensive evaluation by Scott Wheeler of The Athletic. The Blue Jackets currently sit at No. 17 in Wheeler’s 2026 rankings of NHL farm systems, a drop of 11 spots from their No. 6 position in 2025.
The decline, Wheeler notes, stems from a combination of factors including the graduation of Denton Mateychuk to the NHL roster, the trade of forward Gavin Brindley, and a recalibration of expectations surrounding top prospect Cayden Lindstrom following his recovery from injury. Despite these shifts, the Blue Jackets bolstered their pipeline through two first-round selections in the 2025 NHL Draft.
Leading the charge for Columbus is 18-year-old left-handed defenseman Jackson Smith, selected by the Blue Jackets in the first round of the 2025 draft. Smith, who previously excelled in the Western Hockey League and with Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, is currently playing collegiate hockey at Penn State, where he’s averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game and quarterbacking the team’s power play. Wheeler acknowledges Smith’s impressive physical attributes – size, skating ability, and a willingness to engage offensively – but expresses reservations about his hockey IQ, particularly in puck movement under pressure and defensive reads.
“He’s a big, athletic, excellent-skating left-shot defenseman who plays hard and can affect play in a variety of ways,” Wheeler wrote. “But his reads and processing still need some fine-tuning…I’m not sold on him as a PP1 guy up levels.”
Rounding out the top prospects within the Blue Jackets organization are goaltender Pyotr Andreyanov, 19, currently playing for CSKA in Russia, and center Cayden Lindstrom, 20, of Michigan State. Andreyanov, a 2025 draft pick, is described as a technically sound and competitive goaltender with starter potential, though he has signed a five-year contract extension with CSKA that will keep him in Russia through the 2029-30 season. Lindstrom, a power forward with prototypical size, has faced developmental setbacks due to lingering back issues, impacting his performance at Michigan State. Wheeler notes that Lindstrom’s pre-injury projection was significantly higher, and his current trajectory remains uncertain.
Other notable prospects include right-handed defenseman Sergei Ivanov, 21, currently playing in the KHL, and right wing Jordan Dumais, 21, who has battled injury issues but continues to demonstrate offensive skill. Luca Pinelli, 20, a center who has already made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets, and Luca Del Bel Belluz, 22, are also considered promising additions to the team’s depth. The Blue Jackets also have high hopes for defenseman James Malatesta, 22, and forward Owen Griffin, 18, of the Oshawa Generals.
Wheeler’s rankings, which encompass evaluations of nearly 500 prospects, are being released daily from March 9 to April 8, providing a detailed assessment of each NHL organization’s future outlook. The Blue Jackets’ position at No. 17 reflects a complex mix of established talent, emerging players, and lingering uncertainties as the team continues its rebuild.
