NFL’s Highest-Paid Players by Position: 2026 Salary Leaders

July 28, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Heading into the late July 2026 offseason, the financial landscape of professional football continues to shift dramatically as teams manage their salary caps and secure core talent. According to player contract data compiled via Spotrac, Patrick Mahomes reclaimed his spot as the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL following a two-year extension signed in June 2026 that brings his total deal value to $504.75 million.

Quarterback and Offensive Skill Positions Set New Financial Benchmarks

Mahomes usurped Dak Prescott for the honor of highest-paid signal-caller. Prescott had previously held the top spot for nearly two years after signing an extension in September 2024 that pays him $60 million per year. Running back values also saw a significant correction when Saquon Barkley agreed to a two-year, $41 million extension after winning NFL Offensive Player of the Year in his first year with the Philadelphia Eagles. The New York Giants opted against paying Barkley after six seasons, allowing the Eagles to secure him in 2024 free agency.

In the receiving corps, Cincinnati Bengals star Ja’Marr Chase held the mantle of highest-paid wide receiver in NFL history for roughly a year with a contract averaging just north of $40 million per season. However, Seattle Seahawks star Jaxon Smith-Njigba usurped that mark following a memorable 2025 campaign. Smith-Njigba agreed to a four-year, $168.6 million extension after winning Offensive Player of the Year in 2025, leading the league with 1,793 receiving yards and propelling Seattle to a Super Bowl title that featured a 153-yard performance in the NFC title game. At tight end, George Kittle agreed to a four-year, $76.4 million extension with the San Francisco 49ers worth an average of $19.1 million annually, surpassing the contract Trey McBride signed with the Arizona Cardinals in April 2025. Kittle’s durability remains a variable heading into the upcoming season following a hamstring tear and a subsequent Achilles tear in the playoffs.

Trenches and Line Play Command Record Guaranteed Money

Laremy Tunsil agreed to a two-year, $60.2 million extension at the start of the 2026 offseason to become the highest-paid offensive tackle, taking the honor from Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs, who signed a five-year, $140.6 million extension in 2024. Tunsil earned five Pro Bowl nods and graded as Pro Football Focus’ sixth-best offensive tackle in 2025. On the interior, Zack Smith became the highest-paid guard in September via a four-year, $96 million extension, while Tyler Linderbaum became the highest-paid center in March by signing a three-year, $81 million deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, eclipsing Creed Humphrey’s four-year, $72 million extension signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in August 2024.

Defensively, Jalen Carter agreed to a four-year, $152 million extension with $106 million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid defensive tackle in the league. Carter earned his second Pro Bowl nod in 2025 and contributed to the Eagles’ 2024 Super Bowl run, usurping Chris Jones, who earns $31.75 million per year on a five-year, $158.75 million deal. At edge rusher, Will Anderson Jr. secured a three-year, $150 million extension with the Houston Texans featuring just over $100 million guaranteed, following Micah Parsons’ four-year, $186 million extension ($46.5 million AAV) signed in August 2025.

Secondary and Special Teams Valuations Stabilize

Inside linebacker remains the lowest-valued defensive position by average annual value, yet Fred Warner secured a three-year, $63 million extension with $56 million guaranteed in May 2025. Warner has recorded at least 118 total tackles in every professional season prior to an injury-shortened 2025 campaign. In the secondary, Denzel Ward agreed to a two-year, $62.2 million deal with the Cleveland Browns, claiming the title of highest-paid cornerback. Prior to Ward’s deal, Trent McDuffie held the position’s top spot via a four-year, $124 million extension with the Los Angeles Rams that pays $31 million annually. Derwin James narrowly surpassed Kyle Hamilton by signing a three-year, $75.6 million extension in May following his sixth All-Pro nod in 2025.

Special teams investments also reached new heights. Kickers Brandon Aubrey and Chris Boswell share the top financial tier at the position with identical four-year, $28 million pacts yielding $7 million annually, though Aubrey holds $15 million in guaranteed money compared to Boswell’s $10.5 million. Jordan Stout capitalized on a first-team All-Pro 2025 season where he led the league with a 44.9 average net yards per punt, signing a three-year, $12.3 million deal in free agency after following head coach John Harbaugh to the New York Giants.
