NFL Sued Over Genius Sports Shareholding | Legal Dispute
The National Football League is facing scrutiny following a lawsuit alleging its significant financial ties to Genius Sports, a data and technology company. The complaint, filed recently, asserts that the NFL was the largest shareholder of Genius Sports from 2021 to 2025 and continues to hold the position of second-largest shareholder.
The legal action arrives as the NFL and Genius Sports navigate a deepened partnership, recently extended through the 2030 season. The initial agreement, struck in April 2021, designated Genius Sports as the NFL’s official data partner, granting them exclusive rights to distribute play-by-play statistics and Next Gen Stats – advanced player data – to sports betting operators and media companies. That six-year deal was valued at $120 million, according to reports.
The extension, announced in June 2025, adds four years to the existing contract, though financial terms of the modern agreement have not been disclosed. Genius Sports continues to serve as the exclusive distributor of official NFL data feeds, including those powering its BetVision product, a service focused on live betting opportunities. The partnership’s evolution has been lauded by NFL executives, including Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has emphasized the importance of strong partnerships for the league’s continued success.
Steve Bornstein, president of North America for Genius Sports, recently reflected on the partnership’s growth since its inception. He highlighted the initial focus on maximizing the use of official NFL data feeds for sports betting, but also emphasized the broader ambition of connecting the league with its fans through technology. The partnership has expanded to encompass international expansion initiatives and alternate broadcast formats.
The NFL’s investment in Genius Sports predates the formal partnership. The relationship began to solidify shortly before Genius Sports secured the exclusive data deal in 2021. The lawsuit’s claims regarding the NFL’s shareholder status raise questions about potential conflicts of interest, particularly given the league’s significant influence over the data provided to the sports betting industry. The NCAA also has a data partnership with Genius Sports, extending through 2032, providing data from collegiate postseason events.
As the NFL prepares for future seasons, the league and Genius Sports are expected to continue collaborating on innovations in data analytics, fan engagement, and betting experiences. The outcome of the lawsuit and any potential impact on the NFL’s ownership stake in Genius Sports remains to be seen.
