Santos Manager Defends Neymar‘s Actions After Premature Exit from Bench During Match
SÃO PAULO – Santos manager Guilherme Gusmão has staunchly defended Neymar following the forward’s decision to leave the team’s bench during a recent match against Fortaleza, clarifying the situation stemmed from a medical directive and not dissatisfaction with the playing surface. The incident sparked speculation and “fake news,” according to Gusmão, regarding Neymar’s commitment to the club.
The controversy arose after neymar, who was deemed unfit to play against Fortaleza by the Santos health committee, insisted on playing despite medical advice. This led to a pre-persistent plan for his return to action against flamengo, where he did feature. Gusmão emphasized, “Neymar is at Santos because he wants to be at Santos… He said he wanted to play, he said he had to play and so it was. That’s why he didn’t play on Thursday [against Palmeiras].”
Gusmão further explained that Neymar’s absence against Palmeiras was unrelated to concerns about the synthetic pitch, dismissing reports to the contrary. He highlighted Neymar’s potential versatility, stating, “He can do it and he will help us, whether as a false nine, as a midfielder or even on the flanks. So, Neymar on the field, he will help us a lot.”
Despite Neymar’s presence, Santos struggled against Flamengo, with the manager noting missed opportunities for deep ball plays. Interestingly, the team found success – scoring two goals - after Neymar was substituted, offering a glimmer of hope as they prepare to face Palmeiras on Saturday.Gusmão concluded by stressing the importance of collective effort, stating,”we need to insist together, because I’m sure that, together,we will be able to get out of this.”
