Newsom’s State of the State: California’s Inclusive Vision Against Trump’s Darkness

by Emma Walker – News Editor

In a State of the State speech that largely ignored the big budget deficit, Gov. gavin Newsom laid out a vision of California centered on inclusivity and kindness to combat what he framed as Trump’s “reign of darkness and expulsion.” He presented a unifying vision of a Democratic America, potentially serving as a roadmap for a future presidential run.

The speech was a counter to Republican criticisms of California, positioning it as a model state. Newsom emphasized expanding civil rights, pursuing dreams for all, upholding compassion and commitment, and asserting that no one is above the law.

He began by unexpectedly thanking everyone in the chamber, including his detractors, for shaping California. This off-script approach showcased a confident, at-ease demeanor, contrasting with the current president’s divisive rhetoric. He’s honed a warmer, conversational persona through years of podcasting.

Newsom highlighted policies including greater AI regulation (particularly regarding children), increasing health insurance coverage, removing processed foods from schools, expanding the state’s generic drug label (like the $11 insulin pen), banning big investors from buying single-family homes, and maintaining a high minimum wage. He announced a 9% decrease in unsheltered homelessness in 2025 and the rollout of new mental health beds funded by Proposition 1.

He acknowledged the upcoming budget proposal and the tough conversations and cuts it will require, but emphasized that Thursday’s speech was about positioning, not governing. He declared California a “beacon” that is not silent, hunkering down, or retreating.

Newsom is positioning himself as a candidate who understands politics as a negotiation of viewpoints, a message he believes will resonate with Democrats. He expressed a preference for being strong and right, framing that as a fundamentally American stance.
