Newsom Accuses TikTok of Suppressing Trump Criticism; Review Launched
California Governor Gavin newsom has initiated a review into TikTok’s content moderation policies, alleging the platform suppressed content critical of former President Donald Trump. This action comes shortly after TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, announced a deal aimed at averting a potential ban in the United States.
Governor Newsom’s office stated the inquiry will determine if TikTok’s practices violate California state law. The specific laws under scrutiny weren’t immediately detailed, but the inquiry centers on whether TikTok unfairly influenced political discourse. The Los Angeles Times first reported on the investigation.
The move follows concerns raised about TikTok’s ties to the Chinese government and potential for censorship. ByteDance has consistently maintained that it operates independently and does not share user data with the Chinese government, but these assurances have been met with skepticism from U.S. lawmakers. Reuters reports that TikTok has finalized a deal, known as “Project Texas,” with Oracle to store U.S.user data in the United States and allow third-party monitoring of its algorithms.
“Project texas” is intended to address national security concerns that led to the previous threat of a nationwide ban under the Trump administration. The committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) had been negotiating with TikTok for years to reach a resolution. The Council on Foreign Relations provides detailed background on the national security concerns surrounding TikTok.
While the deal with Oracle appears to have satisfied some concerns, Governor Newsom’s investigation signals continued scrutiny of TikTok’s operations and its potential impact on political speech. The outcome of the California review could have broader implications for the platform’s future in the United States.
