Newport RI: Storm Recovery Line for Seniors After Blizzard Hernando

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Newport, RI – The Edward King House Senior Center has established a Storm Recovery Information Line to assist older adults and their caregivers as the community recovers from Blizzard Hernando. The center building remains closed this week, but the dedicated line is now operational at 401-846-7426, extension 1.

The Information Line aims to provide guidance on local services and recovery resources available to residents of Newport and Aquidneck Island following the severe winter storm. According to Carmela Geer, Executive Director of the Edward King House Senior Center, the line is intended to ensure seniors do not sense isolated or uncertain during the recovery period. “Although our building is temporarily closed, our commitment to the older adults of our community remains strong,” Geer stated.

All scheduled activities at the center, including in-person and virtual programming, tax appointments, rehearsals, and evening events, have been postponed whereas staff concentrate on preparing for a safe reopening and providing community support. The Edward King House anticipates resuming its regular schedule next week, contingent on the progress of recovery efforts.

Individuals needing assistance or information are encouraged to call the Storm Recovery Information Line and leave a message. Center staff will promptly return all calls. Updates are also available on the Edward King House Senior Center website, www.edwardkinghouse.org, and through its social media channels, including Facebook.

The Edward King House Senior Center had previously announced the opening of a Regional Emergency Shelter at Gaudet Middle School on February 22nd in anticipation of the blizzard conditions, heavy snowfall, and potential power outages across Aquidneck Island.
