New WHO Guidelines: How to Prevent and Delay Dementia

July 17, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released updated clinical guidelines asserting that physical activity serves as a primary intervention for the prevention of dementia, while simultaneously advising against the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and vitamin supplementation for this purpose.

  • Regular physical exercise is a recommendation for reducing the risk of dementia.
  • Clinical evidence does not support the use of hormone replacement therapy or vitamin supplements as effective tools for dementia prevention.

The guidance identifies that in Belgium, 48 percent of dementia cases may be avoided or delayed through the mitigation of specific risk factors, and that dementia risk can actually be lowered.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Non-Pharmacological Interventions

The WHO report highlights that physical activity is a primary prevention against dementia, while other interventions lack robust clinical support. According to the guidance, vitamin supplementation does not prevent dementia.

The Clinical Disconnect: Hormones and Cognitive Protection

The WHO’s stance is that hormone therapy does not offer a benefit for the prevention of dementia.

Addressing the Public Health Gap

Data, such as that highlighted by Maastricht UMC+, suggests that the risk of dementia can be lowered.
