Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Crisis
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) revealed that renewable energy capacity additions reached record levels in 2023, with solar and wind power leading the charge. The agency’s findings indicate that over 300 gigawatts (GW) of new renewable energy capacity was installed globally last year, marking a 14% increase from 2022.
“The transition to renewable energy is accelerating at an unprecedented pace,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “This growth is not just about meeting climate targets—it’s about securing energy security and economic stability in an era of volatile fossil fuel markets.”
“Countries that have committed to net-zero emissions by 2050 are now deploying renewables at a rate that was once considered impossible just a decade ago.”
China remained the world’s largest contributor to renewable energy expansion, accounting for more than half of all new installations. The country added over 150 GW of solar and wind capacity alone, surpassing its own targets by a significant margin. Meanwhile, the European Union saw a 22% rise in renewable installations, driven by aggressive policies and declining costs.
In the United States, renewable energy deployment also saw strong growth, with over 40 GW of new capacity added in 2023. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in 2022, has been credited with spurring investment in clean energy technologies. “The U.S. is now the third-largest market for renewables, and this trend is expected to continue as states and corporations set ambitious decarbonization goals,” said a senior analyst at BloombergNEF.
Despite the progress, challenges remain. IRENA warned that global renewable energy deployment must triple by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement’s goals. The agency highlighted supply chain bottlenecks, permitting delays, and insufficient grid infrastructure in many regions as key obstacles.
Looking ahead, IRENA projects that renewables could supply nearly 60% of global electricity by 2030, up from around 30% in 2023. This shift would require massive investment in storage, transmission, and workforce training, according to the report.
