New Mexico Edges San Diego State 23-17 in double Overtime Thriller
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A 25-yard touchdown connection between Jack Layne and Cade Keith in the second overtime secured a 23-17 victory for New Mexico over San Diego State on Friday, November 28th. The win keeps the lobos firmly in contention for their inaugural Mountain West championship.
The outcome, coupled with Boise State’s win against Utah State, means the Mountain West Conference championship participants will be determined by computer rankings. New Mexico,alongside Boise state,San Diego State,and UNLV,are all vying for one of two spots in the championship game. A chaotic first overtime saw an interception by Austin Brawley followed by a crucial fumble by James Laubstein, setting the stage for Layne’s game-winning pass.
New Mexico (9-3, 6-2 Mountain West) also received rushing touchdowns from Laubstein and D.J. McKinney. Layne finished the game with 127 passing yards on 14-of-25 attempts, with Dorian Thomas contributing five receptions for 31 yards.
San Diego State (9-3, 5-3) saw their hopes dashed despite a strong performance from Lucky Sutton, who rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. The Aztecs’ overtime possession in the second frame stalled after a failed fourth-and-30 conversion attempt, sealed by a dominant defensive stand from the lobos. Jayden Denegal was intercepted by Brawley during the first overtime.
