Buckeye Gymnastics Duo leads with Trust, Eyes championship Run
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A foundation of trust and a commitment to team unity are driving the Ohio State men’s gymnastics programme as it pursues both Big Ten and national championships, led by co-captains Justin Ciccone and Jesse Pakele. The pair’s close friendship and shared understanding are fostering an surroundings where newcomers feel welcomed and established veterans are inspired to reach their full potential.
Ciccone and Pakele recognize the importance of creating a supportive atmosphere, notably for athletes new to the program. “Making sure that they’re welcome here and that they’re not afraid to practice is vital,” Ciccone explained, recalling his own initial anxieties as a freshman. “I felt a little bit of a tension…we didn’t want the new guys to end up being afraid of practicing in their own gym or their new home.” This extends beyond the gym, with the team engaging in weekly activities to build camaraderie and translate trust into performance. ”I know if Jesse’s going up to do a floor set that he’s going to hit that set as we built that trust in and out of the gym,” Ciccone said.
The duo’s unique leadership dynamic stems from their deep connection. “Him and I - we can read each other super, super well. I know when he’s mad, he knows when I’m mad,” Ciccone noted. However, they are also committed to maintaining objectivity. “There’s never a point where I’m going to favor Jesse’s side just because he’s my best friend,” he emphasized. Both athletes readily accept constructive criticism, fostering a culture of ”keeping it real” while upholding a high standard for themselves and the team.
