New Instagram Trend: Users Prioritize Authenticity Over Perfection

June 29, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Instagram users in Poland are prioritizing unfiltered, authentic content over polished posts, according to a report by Onet. The shift, documented through surveys and user analysis, reflects a broader movement toward transparency on the platform.

The trend emerged as 42% of surveyed users cited “authenticity” as a primary factor in following accounts, up from 28% in 2022, according to Onet’s analysis of 1,200 participants. Users described favoring raw videos, unedited photos, and personal stories over heavily edited or staged content.

Instagram has not publicly addressed the shift, but internal data from the platform shows a 17% decline in engagement for posts tagged with “filter” or “editor” in Poland between January and June 2023. The company’s Polish office confirmed the figures but declined to comment further.

Elżbieta Nowak, a social media strategist based in Warsaw, noted that the trend aligns with global discussions about digital well-being. “Users are rejecting the pressure to present idealized lives,” she said. “This is part of a larger push for mental health awareness online.”

Onet’s report also highlighted a rise in niche communities focused on “real-life” content, such as unfiltered daily routines and candid conversations. These groups saw a 35% growth in followers over the past year, according to the publication.

Facebook, which owns Instagram, has not released specific data on the trend. However, a spokesperson for the company stated in a separate statement that “we are continuously evaluating user behavior to enhance the platform’s value.” The statement did not address authenticity directly.

The shift has prompted some creators to adjust their content strategies. Agata Kowalska, a fashion influencer with 200,000 followers, reported a 20% increase in direct messages after posting unedited photos of her skincare routine. “People want to connect with real experiences,” she said.

Industry analysts suggest the trend could influence future platform updates. “If user demand continues, Instagram may introduce features that prioritize unfiltered content,” said Marcin Lewandowski, a digital media researcher at the University of Warsaw. “But this remains speculative.”

Onet’s findings align with a 2023 study by the European Digital Media Observatory, which noted similar shifts in user preferences across multiple platforms. The study, however, did not isolate Instagram-specific data.

The evolution of user behavior on Instagram underscores ongoing tensions between corporate content strategies and individual expression. As the platform navigates these dynamics, the emphasis on authenticity could reshape how users interact with social media.
