New Horned Mountain Dragon Species Discovered in Thailand and Named After House of the Dragon Character
Citing high-altitude rainforests in western Thailand, international researchers identified a new horned mountain dragon species, Acanthosaura syrax, named after the fictional dragon from the HBO series House of the Dragon. Published in the journal ZooKeys by Poramad Trivalairat and colleagues, the discovery highlights unique genetic and anatomical markers that separate the reptile from known agamid lineages.

Anatomical and Genetic Identification in Mae Wong National Park
The holotype specimen of Acanthosaura syrax, an adult male, was collected on April 23, 2025, at an elevation of 1,340 meters above sea level within the Mae Wong National Park, according to data detailed by El Imparcial. Subsequent fieldwork on May 26 yielded additional specimens. Through a combination of morphological examination and mitochondrial gene sequencing targeting the ND2 and COI genes, researchers confirmed that the lineage is genetically distinct from its closest relative, Acanthosaura lepidogaster.
Morphologically, the newly described lizard exhibits distinct physical traits. According to findings covered by Radio 580, the reptiles feature unusually small nuchal and dorsal crest scales compared to other members of the genus Acanthosaura. Males reach a maximum snout-to-vent length of 69.6 millimeters, while females stretch up to 101.2 millimeters, excluding the tail. The creatures display a characteristic yellowish-green coloration and a dark collar patch, lacking the distinct black eye markings seen in related species.
Geographic Isolation and Conservation Pressures
Restricted to a narrow strip of high-elevation evergreen forest, the newly classified reptile faces severe habitat vulnerability. Science Daily notes that because A. syrax appears confined exclusively to this isolated mountain zone, experts fear that localized environmental pressures could drive the species toward population decline.

The discovery brings the total number of recognized mountain horned dragon species in the Acanthosaura genus to 23. While the real-world creature cannot breathe fire or influence geopolitical struggles for the Iron Throne, its formal classification expands the scientific understanding of regional herpetofauna and underscores the ongoing need for rigorous habitat protection across the Indochinese mountain ranges.
