New Girl Star Max Greenfield Says He Has Seen Scripts for Revival and It Is Happening

August 1, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Max Greenfield confirmed during an appearance on Today that he has read newly written scripts for a potential revival of the Fox sitcom New Girl. According to Greenfield, series creator Liz Meriwether has penned fresh material for the ensemble, fueling speculation about a return for the loft-dwelling group.

Inside the Revival Rumors and Script Readership

The conversation surrounding a potential New Girl revival shifted from online speculation to tangible development when Greenfield told Today hosts Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones that scripts are already circulating among the cast. According to Greenfield, who portrayed Schmidt across the show’s seven-season run, Meriwether overcame her initial hesitation about finding new stories to tell for the characters.

“I’m not going to play the game. As far as I know, it’s happening,” Greenfield stated during the broadcast. Elaborating on the creative process, he added, “I’ve seen scripts. She’s written them. They’re amazing.”

The sitcom originally aired on Fox from 2011 until its conclusion in 2018, amassing a dedicated following that expanded significantly in the streaming era.

Creator Perspective and Production Realities

While Greenfield expressed confidence in the project’s momentum, Meriwether offered a more measured perspective while promoting her Hulu crime thriller series Furious, starring Emmy Rossum. Speaking with TheWrap, Meriwether addressed the complexities of revisiting past intellectual property.

“I feel like everybody who was involved in that show is doing such interesting work right now. And I don’t know, I don’t fully get the reboot thing,” Meriwether noted. “I don’t know if there’s more, in my mind, of things I want to say. If I had another thing that I felt like I had to say, I would say it. But I think that it’s also not totally up to me.”

Current Projects and Industry Timelines

Greenfield appeared on Today primarily to promote his upcoming film work. He stars in Don’t Say Good Luck, a Happy Madison production featuring Sunny Sandler as a teenager navigating high school theater complications amid a family crisis. The feature film is scheduled for release on Netflix on August 14.
