New Covid Variant ‘Stratus‘ Circulating this Autumn,Doctor Warns
Manchester,UK – Health officials are advising caution as a new Covid variant, dubbed ‘Stratus,’ begins to circulate ahead of the autumn and winter virus season. dr. Khan is urging individuals experiencing symptoms to take preventative measures and consider early testing, especially those who are vulnerable or immunocompromised.
The advice comes as cases of respiratory illnesses, including Covid, flu, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus), are expected to rise. If you suspect you have Covid, avoiding contact with vulnerable individuals and staying home when possible remains crucial. Those needing to leave home with symptoms are advised to wear a face covering.
“With Covid, you can get antivirals, but this will only be beneficial if you get tested really early,” dr.Khan explained. “If you are immunocompromised,or have another condition, testing can provide information to your GP and they can consider antiviral medication.”
People over 75 are eligible for a free Covid vaccine through the NHS, which the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) says offers good protection, even against new variants. The UKHSA is also encouraging eligible individuals to book vaccinations against flu and RSV as cases begin to increase.
The UKHSA acknowledged that viruses naturally mutate and change, stating, “it’s normal for viruses to mutate and change, and as more data becomes available on these variants, we’ll have a better understanding of how they interact with our immune systems and how to optimise our protection, as well as actions we can take to keep the most vulnerable safe and live our lives as normally as possible.”
The agency emphasized the importance of vaccination: “The most important thing is for those eligible to get their vaccination when it is due.”
Simple preventative measures like regular hand washing and proper disposal of used tissues can also help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses.
