Nevada Wildfire Jakes Fire: Latest Updates and Containment Efforts

ELKO COUNTY, NEVADA – August 18, 2025Nevada is battling its largest wildfire on record, as the Jakes Fire, now encompassing 82,195 acres in Elko County, continues to grow after merging with the MP 22 Fire on Thursday. The blaze, ignited by a series of lightning strikes on August 1st near Midas, Nevada, is posing a significant challenge to over 550 firefighters currently on the scene.

The Jakes Fire initially absorbed the Snowstorm Fire as it moved northward, demonstrating its rapid and aggressive expansion. Containment efforts have reached 35%, with crews focusing on preventing further spread along the southwest flank. Resources deployed include eight helicopters, 16 bulldozers, and 65 fire engines.

the fire is consuming grass and brush on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, and conditions remain elevated. Forecasts predict wind gusts up to 30 mph on Friday, possibly driving the fire uphill and complicating containment. Air tankers are actively dropping retardant to establish fire breaks.

Understanding Nevada’s Wildfire landscape

Nevada’s wildfire season typically peaks between July and September, coinciding with hot, dry conditions and frequent thunderstorms. The state’s vast expanses of rangeland and forests, coupled with increasing temperatures due to climate change, contribute to heightened fire risk. The BLM, along with the Nevada Division of forestry, plays a critical role in wildfire prevention and suppression.

Elko County, located in northeastern Nevada, is notably vulnerable to wildfires due to its arid climate and extensive sagebrush steppe ecosystem. The area supports a significant ranching industry, and wildfires can pose a threat to livestock and rangeland resources. The nearest major population center is Elko, Nevada, with a population of approximately 20,536 (2024 estimate).

Additional Fire Activity in Nevada

The Adobe Mtn Fire, located north of Elko, is currently 55% contained at 10,668 acres. Fire activity on the Adobe Mtn Fire is minimal, and crews anticipate it will remain within its existing perimeter.Approximately 200 personnel remain assigned to this fire.
