Neurosis Surprise-Releases New Album ‘An Undying Love for a Burning World’ | Pitchfork
California metal band Neurosis surprise-released their first album in a decade, An Undying Love for a Burning World, on Friday, March 21, 2026. The release marks the band’s first since the departure of co-founder Scott Kelly following his 2022 confession to domestic abuse.
The album’s arrival was accompanied by a statement from the band addressing the personal and societal forces that informed its creation. “We need this, perhaps more than ever, and we suspect we are not alone,” the statement read. “The trials and tribulations in our personal lives and as a band, combined with simply trying to navigate the insanity of our society, with the stress, anxiety, and isolation that come with it can be excruciating. Add to that the existential confusion and sorrow of the climate crisis and the sixth mass extinction. This proves enough to cause you to completely lose your mind if you can’t find release or catharsis. This strange emotionally charged music has always been our method of trying to survive this and this is what we’ve always been singing about.”
Alongside the album, Neurosis announced the addition of Aaron Turner, formerly of Isis and currently of Sumac, as a new member. Turner appears on An Undying Love for a Burning World and is scheduled to make his live debut with the band at the Fire in the Mountains festival in Montana this July.
The band’s decision to continue after Kelly’s departure was not immediate. According to Steve Von Till, vocalist and guitarist, the band paused after Kelly’s exit in 2019 to “process and find perspective.” Von Till stated that the decision to move forward stemmed from “a deep internal need to reclaim not only our life’s work, but also our way of dealing with living in a world of meaningless distraction and insanity.”
Turner’s addition to the lineup was described by Jason Roeder, the band’s drummer, as a natural fit. Roeder noted Turner’s long-standing familiarity with Neurosis’s work, referencing Turner’s earlier admiration for the 1993 album Enemy Of The Sun. Von Till added that Turner’s “intensity and energy” matched that of the existing band members, and that the first rehearsal with Turner “felt so natural that the only weird thing about it was that it didn’t feel weird at all.”
An Undying Love for a Burning World features eight tracks: “We Are Torn Wide Open,” “Mirror Deep,” “First Red Rays,” “Blind,” “Seething And Scattered,” “Untethered,” “In The Waiting Hours,” and “Last Light.”
The Quietus reported that Kelly was “fired” from Neurosis in 2019, with the details of the abuse becoming public in 2022. The publication also noted the album represents “the sound of the struggle to be reborn and live with the consequences” following the lineup change.
