Tyler Perry’s latest film, Joe’s College Road Trip, debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s English film list this week, drawing 12.5 million views and marking the biggest opening for a comedy film this year, according to the streaming service. The film features Perry reprising his role as Joe, the cantankerous brother of the iconic Madea, alongside Jermaine Harris as his grandson, B.J.

The comedy follows Joe as he accompanies B.J. On a cross-country journey to visit college campuses. The film, directed and written by Perry, aims to deliver both humor and a lesson in Black history, according to Netflix’s promotional materials.

The success of Joe’s College Road Trip comes as other series and films too saw significant viewership on the platform. The Lincoln Lawyer Season 4, which premiered with Mickey Haller facing a murder charge, secured the No. 1 spot on the English TV list with 9.6 million views. Bridgerton Season 4 continued to attract audiences, with Part 1 landing at No. 2 on the English TV list with 9.4 million views and previous seasons also remaining popular – Season 1 garnered 1.9 million views and Season 3, 2.2 million.

On the non-English language front, the German thriller Unfamiliar led with 10.4 million views, while the Brazilian action film State of Fear topped the non-English film list with 8 million views. The film is a follow-up to the popular Brazilian crime series Brotherhood, and centers on a lawyer’s desperate search for her kidnapped niece.

Comedian Katt Williams’ latest special, Katt Williams: The Last Report, garnered 7.1 million views, and the dating experiment Love Is Blind: Ohio earned 4.6 million views with the release of its first six episodes.

The Polish limited series Lead Children, inspired by true events of lead poisoning in the 1970s, debuted at No. 2 on the non-English TV list with 4.2 million views. The Mexican drama A Father’s Miracle also saw strong viewership, landing at No. 2 on the non-English film list with 7.3 million views, telling the story of a father wrongfully imprisoned and fighting to prove his innocence.
