Netflix has initiated exclusive negotiations to purchase Warner Bros. Discovery,
following a successful bid that surpassed offers from Paramount and Comcast,
Bloomberg reports.
As part of its acquisition proposal, Netflix has committed to maintaining theatrical releases for films. However, the deal is anticipated to undergo rigorous antitrust review.
On Thursday,December 5th,a group identifying as “concerned feature film producers” submitted a letter to Congress expressing concerns about the potential acquisition. The producers argued the deal could “effectively hold a noose around the theatrical marketplace.”
Paramount has voiced its own objections, citing potential regulatory issues and suggesting possible legal challenges should Warner Bros. Discovery proceed with the Netflix deal. Paramount’s position is further supported by backing from the Trump administration.
