Netflix A Different World Reboot Expands Black Diaspora Representation at Hillman College

Netflix A Different World Reboot Expands Black Diaspora Representation at Hillman College

October 1, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Netflix released a sequel to the sitcom A Different World, bringing the fictional Hillman College back to television nearly 40 years after the original series premiered in 1987, cnn.com reported. The new series expands its portrayal of Black college life by introducing members of the African diaspora into the main cast for the first time.

Expanding the African Diaspora at Hillman College

The 10-episode reboot features Kojo Achebe, a Ghanaian Nigerian international student from London who studies fashion merchandising and aspires to be a designer. British Nigerian actor Chibuikem Uche portrays the character, drawing on his own background and family expectations to shape the role. According to cnn.com, showrunner Felicia Pride stated at the show’s Morehouse College premiere in Atlanta that reflecting the diversity of Blackness at Historically Black Colleges and Universities was a deliberate choice.

Executive producer Debbie Allen conceived the idea for an African student character by reflecting on her own time at Howard University between 1968 and 1971, where she recalled a large foreign student body primarily from Africa. While the original 1987 series featured South African characters in a 1990 episode focused on anti-apartheid activism, the new Netflix series marks the first time an African character is part of the main cast.

Connecting the Cast Across Generations

The sequel links its new characters to the original 1987 cast through familial relationships. Capital XTRA reported the full character connections, noting that Deborah Wayne is portrayed as the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, played by Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy in the 1987 series. Shaquille Johnson appears as the son of original character Ron Johnson, played by Darryl M. Bell. Ellington appears as the son of Denise Kendall, portrayed originally by Lisa Bonet.

Alongside the new generation, several original cast members return to reprise their roles. Cree Summer returns as Freddie Brooks, Dawnn Lewis as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor, Glynn Turman as Colonel Bradford Taylor, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James, according to Capital XTRA.

Reboot Tackles Contemporary Campus Issues and Institutional Graft

The reboot addresses contemporary issues alongside classic sitcom themes. The Guardian reported that the series tackles institutional graft, chronic underfunding, enrollment chaos, and campus bomb threats. Reviewing the premiere, The Guardian described the series as a rare sitcom reboot that meets the brief by combining fresh storylines with the nostalgic tone of the original 1987 broadcast.

Behind the scenes, the production formed an HBCU council composed of current students who provided feedback to the writers and on set. Cast members were encouraged to draw on their lived experiences to shape their emotional storylines, maintaining the focus on student life, relationships, and social issues that defined the original run on television.
