Nepal Floods: South Africans Missing as Rescue Efforts Intensify
Terricia Govender, a 33-year-old pilgrim from Isipingo Beach in Durban, is among six South Africans missing after catastrophic flash floods struck the Tibet-Nepal border region, according to local news reports and family statements.
Disappearance at the Gyirong Immigration Centre
The disaster unfolded when floodwaters swept through the Gyirong immigration centre and surrounding border towns in Tibet and Nepal. Terricia Govender, travelling alone after beginning her journey on 12 August, had joined an Isha Foundation group returning from the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrimage.
According to the Isha Foundation, 77 pilgrims and three volunteers were stationed at the immigration centre when the flash flood hit. Communication links to the area were immediately severed, leaving families without direct contact. Sadhguru, founder of the Isha Foundation, stated that no official information regarding the individuals at the centre has been available since the floodwaters struck.
Family Search and Birthday Milestone
Family members last spoke with Govender on Tuesday, 25 August, just days after she celebrated her 33rd birthday on 20 August with a social media post. Her mother, Linda Govender, stated that her daughter had looked forward to the pilgrimage for months and felt a deep spiritual connection to the region.
“She felt as if she had met him for the first time on her birthday,” Linda Govender told a local news outlet, describing her daughter’s devotion to Sadhguru and her excitement over visiting the sacred mountain landscape. Linda Govender emphasized that the family is waiting for news of her safety, noting that the wider regional casualty and missing-person counts continue to fluctuate as rescue teams push into isolated mountain sectors.
Regional Impact and Relief Efforts
Across the broader disaster zone spanning Nepal’s Rasuwa district and adjacent Tibetan valleys, authorities and humanitarian groups are racing to deliver aid amid ongoing warnings of further lake outbursts, according to The Guardian. Gift of the Givers announced it is awaiting a formal request for aid before deploying support resources into the disaster area.
South African news media have confirmed that at least six South Africans remain unaccounted for in the wake of the cross-border floods. The Isha Foundation is currently working alongside regional authorities to assist with ongoing search and rescue operations.
