No. 9 Nebraska secured a hard-fought 84-75 overtime victory against Iowa on Sunday, matching a school record for wins in a season with 26, according to a report from the University of Nebraska athletic department.
The Hawkeyes rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to force the extra period, but the Huskers closed the game on a 9-0 run. Cale Jacobsen led Nebraska in overtime, scoring six of his career-high 15 points during that stretch. Jacobsen also achieved a career-best with eight rebounds.
Sam Hoiberg contributed four consecutive points, and Jamarques Lawrence sealed the win with a steal, and layup. The victory improves Nebraska’s record to 26-5 on the season. Iowa fell to 20-11, with a 10-10 record in Big Ten play.
Nebraska’s strong shooting performance – 50 percent from the field and 10 three-pointers made – allowed them to surpass Iowa’s scoring defense, which had previously led the Big Ten, allowing only 65.2 points per game.
Iowa was led in scoring by Cooper Koch and Kael Combs, both with 18 points.
With the win, Nebraska has secured the No. 2 overall seed in next week’s Big Ten Tournament and will play in the quarterfinals on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m. Iowa will open Big Ten Tournament action on Wednesday as the No. 9 seed, facing either Oregon or Maryland.
The rivalry between Iowa and Nebraska extends to the football field, known as the Heroes Game, with Nebraska currently leading the all-time series 30-23-3, though Iowa has won the last three meetings, including a 40-16 victory on November 28, 2025.
