NBA Roundup: Pistons Beat Lakers, Magic Stumble & Wemby Delivers

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

A stunning performance by Terry Burton, scoring 20 points with 8 rebounds, propelled the Memphis Grizzlies to a 146-107 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night, a result that reverberated through the league as several playoff contenders secured their positions and others faced mounting pressure.

The Los Angeles Lakers, despite a nine-game winning streak being snapped by the Detroit Pistons on Monday, remain firmly in control of the Western Conference’s No. 3 seed, holding a three-game lead over the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Houston Rockets. However, Detroit extended its lead in the Eastern Conference, defeating the Lakers 110-113, showcasing a resilience that has defined their season. The Pistons, along with the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs, are the only teams to have officially clinched playoff berths.

San Antonio’s victory over the Miami Heat, 136-111, secured the Spurs their first division title in nine years, largely thanks to the impact of Victor Wembanyama, who contributed 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 5 blocks. The win sent a clear message to the rest of the league about their championship aspirations.

Elsewhere, the Houston Rockets suffered a significant setback, falling to the Chicago Bulls 132-124. A recurring issue of late-game execution proved to be their undoing, as they lost for the seventh time in their last 13 games. The Rockets face a crucial matchup against Minnesota on Wednesday.

In a surprising turn of events, the Orlando Magic lost to the Indiana Pacers 128-126, despite a strong performance from Paolo Banchero, who scored 39 points. The Pacers’ victory came against a backdrop of generally poor performance from teams expected to contend for playoff spots.

The Golden State Warriors secured a 111-113 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, but the win was overshadowed by an injury to a player. The specifics of the injury were not immediately available. The Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks also secured wins, defeating the Utah Jazz 143-127 and the Memphis Grizzlies 146-107 respectively, fulfilling expectations in their matchups.

The play-in tournament picture is also taking shape. In the East, the Philadelphia 76ers will face the Orlando Magic, while the Miami Heat will accept on the Charlotte Hornets. In the West, the Phoenix Suns will play the LA Clippers, and the Portland Trail Blazers will face the Golden State Warriors.

The regular season is set to conclude on Sunday, April 12, with daily updates on the playoff picture expected until then.
