However, the spot is rarely associated with great white sharks. The recent encounter occurred during a routine trip operated by Ocean Adventures, running between São Martinho do Porto and Nazaré.
The tour crew reported that the animal approached their vessel and circled it briefly while displaying calm, curious behavior rather than aggression. Nuno Santos, who operates the boat tours, spoke to local news outlet SIC Notícias and pointed out that the creature featured a distinctive white ventral area, suggesting it could be a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias).

Marine biologists view confirmed sightings of great whites along continental Portugal as exceptionally unusual. As highly migratory apex predators, white sharks typically travel vast distances across ocean basins, tracking seasonal water temperatures and marine mammal populations. While rare sightings occur in the Mediterranean and stray individuals occasionally navigate the broader North Atlantic, local waters lack the large seal colonies that draw these predators to established hunting grounds like South Africa, California, or Cape Cod.
