NEW HAVEN,Conn. – navy sprint football players Luke O’Connell and Grant Sterchi have been named Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) Players of the Week, the league announced Monday. O’Connell earned Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Sterchi was selected as Rookie of the Week, following Navy’s dominant 40-7 victory over Cornell this past weekend.
The recognition highlights Navy’s strong start to the 2025 season and underscores the immediate impact of both players. O’Connell’s performance directed a potent offensive first half, while Sterchi’s debut showcased a potential game-changing receiving threat for the Midshipmen. Navy will look to continue its winning momentum on the road against St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, Sept. 26.
O’Connell completed 7 of 9 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns against Cornell. He also contributed a 48-yard rushing touchdown, breaking multiple tackles en route to the end zone. O’Connell orchestrated all six of Navy’s first-half touchdown drives before being replaced by J.P. Bobo and Rhett Sypult.The Navy offense amassed 294 yards in the first half under his direction.
Sterchi made an immediate splash in his collegiate debut, hauling in two passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. His scoring receptions covered 66 and 79 yards, both occurring in the first half. The first touchdown came on a third-down play along the left sideline, while the second followed an interception by teammate Tucker Opdahl at the Cornell 21-yard line.
Navy’s scoring began with O’Connell connecting with Sterchi for a 66-yard touchdown on their opening drive. Following Opdahl’s interception, O’connell quickly found Sterchi again for a 79-yard score, extending Navy’s lead to 20-0.O’Connell later added a 48-yard rushing touchdown on a fourth-and-one play.
Navy will face St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, Sept.26 at 6:00 p.m. in Hillburn, N.Y. The game will be live streamed on FloCollege, with live stats also available.
