Natural Gas Storage surpluses Persist Across US, AGA Report Shows
Washington, D.C. – September 25, 2025 – Natural gas inventories across all U.S. regions are currently at or above the five-year average, according to the latest Natural Gas Market Indicators report released today by the American Gas Association (AGA). The Mountain region holds the largest surplus, at 20.4 percent. This comes as the industry monitors LNG export trends, evolving weather patterns, and potential production gains heading into the winter heating season.
the report details regional storage levels as of the week ending September 25, 2025. While the Pacific and South Central regions are the only areas exceeding year-ago storage levels - with surpluses of 4.2 percent and 6.9 percent respectively – deficits in other regions range from -4.5 percent in the Midwest to -1.1 percent in the East.
Key areas to watch, according to the AGA report, include:
* LNG: Despite a week-over-week dip in departing U.S. LNG vessels in mid-September, feedgas deliveries remain robust. the report questions the potential trajectory of U.S. LNG export volumes for the remainder of 2025.
* Weather: An increased probability of above-normal temperatures extending into early October raises concerns about the potential impact on underground storage refills as the winter heating season approaches.
* Production: Forecasts indicating production gains into 2026 are prompting questions about whether these gains will translate into continued year-over-year growth in natural gas rig counts.
